Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
